Juvenile Detention Center Teacher Job Description

 

Position Summary:

 

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and adaptable teacher to deliver academic instruction to youth housed in the Woodward County Detention Center, using a structured, online curriculum. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to educational equity and rehabilitation, and be capable of fostering a positive learning environment that supports academic growth, personal development, and social-emotional learning.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Deliver and manage instruction using an approved online learning platform aligned with state and local education standards
  • Facilitate student engagement with curriculum through direct support, one-on-one assistance, and small group instruction when appropriate.
  • Monitor student progress and performance through the online system, providing feedback, academic support, and encouragement.
  • Collaborate with detention center staff, counselors, and administrators to support student development and ensure student safety.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and progress in accordance with facility and district policies.
  • Uphold a trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach to teaching incarcerated youth.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
  • Valid Oklahoma teaching certification.
  • Technological proficiency to apply to online learning curriculum and digital classroom tools.
  • Excellent communication, patience, and classroom management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience working with at-risk youth, alternative education, or correctional educational settings.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed teaching practices and restorative justice principles.
  • Experience delivering online curriculum in an asynchronous or blended model.
  • Familiarity with the juvenile justice system and re-entry support strategies.
  • Bilingual would be a plus.

Working Conditions:

 

  • Position is based within a secure juvenile facility.
  • Requires daily interaction with youth in custody, security personnel, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • MAy include physical demands such as walking between units and standing for extended periods of time. 
  • Adherence to strict security and confidentiality is required.
